3 hours ago by Philip Koch
"Becky Sharp" (1935), based on Thackery's novel, "Vanity Fair," is credited with being the first feature film shot entirely in Technicolor - though filmmakers had been experimenting with color techniques almost since the beginning. ... Using the new MVC codec, an extension of the MPEG-4 AVC codec currently used by most Blu-ray discs, 3D films will require around 50% more space than their 2D counterparts while the discs should be backwards compatible with existing Blu-ray ...

Apple Countersues Nokia for Copying iPhone Patents | John ...
11 Dec 2009 by John Paczkowski
So that tit-for-tat would result in no phones from Apple and no media players from Nokia, and likely the end of both the GSM and MPEG-4 standards. So Nokia is playing a dangerous game. > So what's Apple's endgame? ... Well I won't be drawn into unnecessary insults, and you make a fair point about the in-store activation - I got mine delivered so wasn't aware of that option. However, unless Apple have already been made to climb down on this issue, as far as I am aware you ...

List of formats supported by the PS3
26 Oct 2006 by Kristine C.
PS3 was originally delayed because there were protection issues with BluRay and now they simply release MPEG-4 as a supporting format. Doesn't that sorta defeat the purpose of even bothering with BluRay protection if people will exploit .... Don't you think that its possible that someone might even rip their own dvds for their own backup and fair use (you have have heard of fair use right, since all you whine about are copyrights and piracy), and use the PS3 to play back ...

Remastered RoboCop finally coming to Blu-ray -- Engadget HD
13 Sep 2007 by Darren Murph
25GB MPEG2, huh. Isn't this tantamount to throwing one's hands into the air and admitting that Blu-ray is going to endure a poor, poor holiday season? This is precisely my #1 reason why Blu-ray shouldn't exist. I don't like having to reference resources on the net to ... You guys are almost being too fair. I was wrong--Blu-Ray needs you to be biased in their favor. Just announce the release next time and keep quiet with the details. You're making me feel sorry for them. ...

David Haywood's MAME(tm) WIP » Blog Archive » CDi in Review
28 Oct 2009 by Haze
I've always said that it's not quite fair to treat the CD-i as a video game system… at least, not in the same manner that stuff like the Genesis and SNES are. When Philips came up with the idea, multimedia was seen as the wave of the future . No one knew what to really do with it though, ... 7th Guest is a Digital Video title (Mpeg decoder card) so I haven't had the chance to test it (MESS/MAME can't really do MPEG decoding in the near future for various reasons) ...

The real patent story behind Apple vs Nokia — RoughlyDrafted Magazine
11 Dec 2009 by danieleran
Nokia, Apple, and many other companies have all contributed to pooled standards such as MPEG video, WiFi wireless networking, web standards, and mobile standards such as GSM and UMTS. ... It's a case of Nokia, finding itself well behind the curve in mobile phones, attempting to extort unfair, unreasonable, and discriminatory licensing terms against Apple for patents which Nokia has already committed to license under fair reasonable and nondiscriminatory terms. ...
