I'd worked with him before, and I wanted to use an actor I knew – he was the only actor I sent the script to. I also sent the script to my old friend David Hemmings for his opinion, and also I wanted him to play one of the supporting roles, but he unfortunately died before we ...

Color Me Kubrick | Film Review | Slant Magazine
24 Mar 2007
Coyly styling itself as "a true-ish story"—though with Conway's demise (a mere three months before Kubrick's), the filmmakers seem answerable to no one for the story's truth—the script soon lets any tension go slack while it dithers ... Of course, Malkovich is far too sophisticated an actor not to vary his tones, moving from dainty to jaded to cagey to desperate, but with no strong narrative impetus it all becomes pointless shading unmoored in psychological development. ...

Tribeca Review: Colour Me Kubrick - Cinematical
4 May 2006 by Martha Fischer
Free to do pretty much anything he wants -- he is, after all, playing a man whose life revolved around being a gloriously bad actor -- Malkovich has a wonderful time with Conway, throwing out a new accent with every scene, and glorying in his wildly unflattering wardrobe. ... While Colour Me Kubrick is largely episodic, two extended threads do surface in its second half; not coincidentally, they provide the film with its warmest, most fully developed characters. ...

Colour Me Kubrick British drama based on a true story, starring John Malkovich as a conman who impersonated Stanley Kubrick. Subtitled “A true…ish story”, this is an engaging, frequently funny comedy-drama with a superb performance .... Sam Taylor-Wood's film was, frankly, ridiculous and featured an actor having what looked like a very painful wank in the desert. At one point he's leaning over on one elbow on painfully rocky ground. Also he doesn't seem to be enjoying it ...

Being John Malkovich being Alan Conway being Stanley Kubrick, in colour. John Malkovich, now 54, is a favored American character actor. Imdb lists “Con Air” (1997) first after his name on the index page. ... So wasn't John the logical choice for another satire, “Colour Me Kubrick, A True…ish Story” (distributed ThinkFilm, produced by Europa Corp – a company named after Jupiter's oceanic moon, directed by Brian W.
